Definition

Pink Lentil Split / Masoor Dal is an important pulse that is popular in southern Asia. It is an important part of the diet in northern India. It is a pulse that is grown in India, Canada, and Australia. It is the lentils whose covers are removed and are split into two parts. These seeds have a lens like a shape that is why they are called lentils. It is the softest dal that cooks very quickly without being soaked in water for hours. This Masoor dal looks red, pink or orange in color but when they are cooked they become golden color. They have an earthy aroma after cooking. These lentils are considered third highest protein content food with 26% of protein by weight. Masoor dal is widely used for making the normal dal in houses. This dal is made by boiling the masoor dal in water along with some selected spices. This makes it like a soup. Some vegetables can also be added to it to make it more delicious and nutritious. Indian bread (roti) is also prepared with masoor dal. Due to the high amount of protein, it is preferred in daily diet with rice or roti. It takes very less time for cooking it in a pressure cooker than cooking in open vessels. There are many uses of this dal other than just making the dal or soup. Therefore every Indian house has this dal which they use in daily cooking for getting protein contents.
