The dal is rich in calcium and iron. Like other lentils or dal this is also a rich source of proteins. The whole black gram is de-husked with natural method. In north India, dal is served with potato curry or chapatis. They are low in fat and cholesterol but high in fiber. The black lentils or grams are also known as dal makhani or ma ki dal in Hindi. Many popular Punjabi dishes are prepared with this dal. They are cooked on low flame for hours for a creamy texture. The name dal makhani is due to the creamy or buttery texture of the dal.
